Bugatti continues to blur the line between engineering and art with its latest one-off creation, the W16 Mistral “Fly Bug.” Built as part of the brand’s ultra-exclusive Sur Mesure customization program, this bespoke roadster was developed in close collaboration with a long-time collector. It belongs to a curated set of four highly personalized vehicles, each inspired by elements of nature and designed to push Bugatti’s craftsmanship to new extremes.
The “Fly Bug” draws its inspiration from the delicate beauty and precision of a dragonfly. Following earlier models in the same collection—including the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, Bugatti Chiron, and Bugatti Divo—this latest creation embodies lightness, fluidity, and intricate detailing. The concept was brought to life through a close partnership between the collector and Bugatti’s Head of Design, Frank Heyl, before being refined by the brand’s CMF (Color, Materials, Finish) specialists in Berlin.
Visually, the car stands out thanks to a newly developed elliptical pattern that flows seamlessly across the bodywork. This motif tightens toward the rear, blending into darker air intake sections and evolving previous design languages seen in the collection. The exterior is finished in a bespoke “Dragonfly Blue,” a dynamic color that shifts between blue and turquoise depending on lighting conditions—mirroring the iridescence of dragonfly wings. Even the wheels have been specially matched to this finish, a complex task given the variation in materials and surfaces.
Inside, the same attention to detail continues. Bugatti introduces a layered material combining patterned leather with Alcantara, creating a subtle three-dimensional texture. The elliptical theme is carefully adapted across interior surfaces, including both the door panels and armrests—marking the first time such a design has been executed across multiple elements. Precision engineering was also required to integrate the iconic Bugatti Macaron badge directly into the side graphics, a first for the brand.
Adding a final artistic touch, the gear shifter features the renowned “Dancing Elephant,” a tribute to Rembrandt Bugatti and the brand’s heritage in fine art. Every detail of the “Fly Bug” reflects months of collaboration between designers, engineers, and craftspeople, resulting in a hypercar that is not only a standalone masterpiece but also part of a larger, cohesive collector’s vision.
