McLaren MCL-HY GTR: A 720-HP V6 Track Car Built Without Compromise

The latest track-focused machine from McLaren proves that sometimes less really is more. Developed alongside the upcoming MCL-HY endurance racer, this exclusive GTR variant takes a different approach—ditching hybrid complexity in favor of raw, lightweight performance.

Originally engineered to compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship Hypercar class starting in 2027, the MCL-HY has now spawned a customer-only derivative aimed at elite buyers. Unlike its race-ready sibling, the GTR is strictly a track car, free from both road regulations and racing restrictions. That freedom allows McLaren engineers to rethink the formula.

At the heart of the GTR sits a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 engine producing around 720 horsepower—all without hybrid assistance. By removing the Motor Generator Unit (MGU), McLaren has significantly reduced weight, enabling the car to dip below 1,000 kilograms (2,204 pounds). That makes it not only lighter than its racing counterpart but also more powerful in pure combustion terms.

For comparison, the hybrid-equipped Hypercar version delivers up to 697 horsepower to the rear wheels. Similarly, rivals like the Ferrari 499P Modificata also push performance beyond their race variants, though Ferrari retains hybrid support. McLaren, however, has opted for a purist approach—prioritizing simplicity and driver engagement.

Both the race car and the GTR share a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and were developed simultaneously through a close collaboration between McLaren’s road and racing divisions. Track testing for the Hypercar version is already underway, with its competitive debut set for 2027. Meanwhile, deliveries of the GTR are expected to begin by the end of next year.

Ownership goes beyond the car itself. Buyers will be enrolled in an exclusive two-year program featuring six track events at international circuits, complete with professional driver coaching and full pit crew support from McLaren.

While pricing remains undisclosed, it’s expected to exceed the already steep $2.1 million starting price of the road-legal McLaren W1. That positions the GTR as the ultimate expression of performance from Woking—built for those willing to sacrifice road legality in pursuit of pure speed.

In essence, the MCL-HY GTR is an unrestrained hypercar—freed from regulations, stripped of excess weight, and engineered to deliver an uncompromised driving experience on track.
