Mercedes PureSpeed: First Look at the Ultimate Roofless SL
The SL-based AMG PureSpeed is notably without a windshield. Remember the term “Mythos”—it signifies a new series of ultra-exclusive Mercedes models. Leading this lineup is the AMG SL, which features a completely removed roof and absent A-pillars, giving it a distinctive appearance. After its world debut in May at a Monaco event, the PureSpeed is now on public roads.
Recent images capture the AMG PureSpeed undergoing final testing on regular streets. The test program, covering over 1,864 miles, might not seem extensive, but considering this is a modified SL rather than an all-new vehicle, it’s significant. Testing is currently taking place on various roads in northern Italy, with further evaluations planned at Porsche Engineering’s Nardo track.
Having experienced the SLR Stirling Moss, the AMG PureSpeed might not evoke the same level of excitement. However, its unique look sets it apart from most vehicles. Although the roofless design concept is not entirely new—echoed in models like the McLaren Elva, Lamborghini SC20, Ferrari Monza SP1/SP2, and Aston Martin V12 Speedster—the PureSpeed still stands out.
Mercedes has camouflaged the prototypes, but they closely resemble the model seen previously. The Formula 1-inspired halo, a streamlined curved bar attached to the body, remains a key feature. This halo, along with two helmets, is included with the purchase of the topless SL.
While the PureSpeed might not match the SLR Stirling Moss in terms of sheer excitement, it is sure to attract attention—provided owners decide to drive it rather than keep it stored. Decades from now, it’s likely some will fetch high prices at auction due to their limited mileage.
However, the PureSpeed won’t be as rare as the SLR Stirling Moss, of which only 75 units were produced. Mercedes-AMG plans to build 250 units of this Mythos model, aimed at “enthusiasts and collectors.” To achieve this, Mercedes collaborated with Pininfarina, leveraging its expertise in crafting low-volume specialty vehicles.
