Mercedes-AMG SL Set to Go Softer, Embrace Grand Touring Roots

The next update of the Mercedes-AMG SL could mark a notable shift in character, moving away from outright performance toward a more comfort-focused grand touring experience. Reports suggest that the strong reception of the Mercedes-Maybach SL has encouraged Mercedes-Benz to rethink the SL’s positioning, especially as it continues to share its platform with the GT.

To better separate the SL from its sportier sibling, AMG is expected to retune the chassis, giving the convertible a softer, more refined driving dynamic. This repositioning would align the SL more closely with grand tourer expectations rather than a sharp, track-focused machine. Alongside these changes, the facelift is likely to introduce updated styling cues such as star-inspired headlights and taillights, redesigned bumpers, the latest infotainment system, and a new steering wheel design. It remains uncertain whether any of the ultra-luxury touches from the Maybach version will make their way into standard models.

Powertrain updates could also play a significant role in the SL’s evolution. The current turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 416 horsepower, may be replaced by a more refined turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six delivering around 449 horsepower. Meanwhile, the V8 option is expected to receive an upgrade, potentially pushing the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 close to the 650-horsepower mark. Regardless of the engine choice, mild-hybrid technology is set to become standard across the range. However, the future of the plug-in hybrid SL 63 SE Performance remains uncertain, with some reports indicating it could be discontinued.

Overall, this strategic shift would allow Mercedes to clearly distinguish the SL from the GT, catering to a different audience. With the Maybach version proving there’s demand for a more luxurious take, positioning the SL as a refined grand tourer seems like a logical next step.
